Kara & Jacob

Sometimes a very simple painting like this works very well. I sketched Kara, a female black lab, and Jacob, her 18-month-old companion, at a friend's house in Metlakatla, a Tsimshian Indian village in Southeast Alaska. Jacob would gleefully throw himself on the lab and give her big hugs. But I could tell from Kara's expression that she was becoming somewhat uneasy over these displays of affection. I suspect her canine thoughts came close to my human ones: As Kara gets older, so Jacob gets bigger.
